Starting Clear Aligners In Term 3: What To Expect With Angel Aligners™

A mid-year start can be an ideal time to begin clear aligner treatment in NSW. Term 3 often brings a more stable routine after winter holidays, giving patients and families time to settle into treatment before the busy end-of-year period.
If you are considering Invisalign® or Angel Aligners™ for yourself or your teen, this guide explains what to expect, how the process works, and how to manage treatment alongside school, sport, and travel.
At Coombe Orthodontics, every plan begins with a Specialist Orthodontist consultation and an iTero 3D scan, allowing precise planning and a clear understanding of your treatment journey.
Your Term 3 treatment timeline
Most clear aligner journeys follow a structured pathway, especially when starting mid-year.
Consultation and iTero 3D scan
Your journey begins with a Specialist Orthodontist consultation. At Coombe Orthodontics, this includes an iTero 3D scan (consultations are referenced at $185). The scan creates a detailed digital model of your teeth and bite for accurate planning.
Digital treatment planning
Your Specialist Orthodontist designs a customised plan for Invisalign® or Angel Aligners™. This includes decisions around attachments, elastics if required, wear protocols, and whether DentalMonitoring will be used.
Aligner fabrication and fitting
Once approved, your aligners are manufactured. At your fitting appointment, you will receive your first sets along with instructions for wear and care. Typical wear time is 20 to 22 hours per day for both Invisalign® and Angel Aligners™.
Remote monitoring with DentalMonitoring
Many patients use DentalMonitoring for weekly or periodic check-ins. This allows your Specialist Orthodontist to track progress remotely, reducing the need for frequent in-clinic visits during busy school terms.
Refinements and retainers
Most treatments include refinement aligners to fine-tune results. Once treatment is complete, retainers are provided to maintain your new smile.
Why Term 3 is a smart time to start
A Term 3 start offers several practical advantages:
- Consistent routine supports 20 to 22 hour daily wear compliance
- Time to adapt before end-of-year events and school milestones
- Easier coordination with winter and spring sport schedules
- Opportunity to settle into aligner habits after winter holidays
Starting mid-year also allows patients to build momentum before exams, formal events, and holiday travel.
How Invisalign® works
Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made aligners designed from your 3D scan. Each aligner applies controlled force to gradually move teeth into position.
Key features include:
- Designed and planned by your Specialist Orthodontist
- May include attachments or elastics depending on complexity
- Suitable for mild to complex orthodontic cases in many situations
- Requires consistent wear of 20 to 22 hours per day
Invisalign® treatment is highly dependent on compliance and regular monitoring to ensure predictable outcomes.
How Angel Aligners™ work
Angel Aligners™ use a staged system called the 7+3 Method: seven days of gentler movement followed by three days of stiffer aligner force per cycle (7 + 3 = 10).
Key features include:
- Custom aligners designed from iTero 3D scans
- Smooth, low-profile design for comfort
- Anti-reflective finish for subtle appearance in photos
- Supervised by a Specialist Orthodontist
- Requires 20 to 22 hours of daily wear
Angel Aligners™ and Invisalign® are both effective systems, with suitability depending on bite complexity and clinical goals.
