Straight teeth offer more than just an aesthetic benefit; they can actually help you to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.
Having crooked teeth can often make it difficult to brush and floss properly, as there are so many hard to reach places. This means there is a greater likelihood of plaque build-up and you can ultimately suffer from things like tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease. When teeth are correctly aligned, it can also help with bite problems, such as overbites and underbites, which can have an impact on chewing ability and function of speech.
Aside from these health benefits, braces also have a great cosmetic impact by creating beautifully straight smiles. Having straight teeth can increase your inclination to smile which helps in social and professional settings.
At Coombe Orthodontics, we use Insignia braces which are the most up-to-date braces technique currently available. Insignia is the only system of braces that delivers a customised solution in the correction of your smile. The system’s individualised brackets, precision (computer-assisted) bracket placement and custom wires make your treatment more comfortable and efficient.
How does Insignia work?
Insignia’s sophisticated imaging software creates a 3D representation of your bite and from this your brackets and archwires are custom-fabricated with your exact prescription. The brackets are custom-milled to deliver the desired alignment as specified in the 3D treatment plan.
Insignia utilises an indirect bonding technique. The customised brackets are delivered in position in pre-prepared jigs. The teeth are prepared as they would normally be for regular braces; however instead of individually positioning the brackets one by one the custom tray is placed over the teeth, attaching 3-4 brackets at once. Once all the brackets are placed and set, the custom archwire is then inserted. The customised orthodontic archwires are created using a milling and shaping process.
Benefits of Insignia braces
- Time spent in braces is reduced by 25-35%
- Fewer appointments
- Virtual 3D model included in your treatment plan
- Optimal tooth movement precisely calculated
- No need for manual placement of brackets; Insignia braces define precisely where your brackets should sit from the outset of treatment.
Here at Coombe Orthodontics we also offer ceramic braces at both of our clinics in Toukley and Wahroonga.Ceramic braces give an aesthetically superior look since they are made of porcelain and match the colour of the tooth. This often makes them a popular choice for our adult patients who are looking to straighten their smile without garnering attention.
Other benefits of ceramic brackets include:
- The ceramic brackets are very strong and rarely dislodge from the tooth.
- They are designed to be stain resistant so you won’t suffer the embarrassment of discoloured braces.
- Because of the material, ceramic braces tend to be less irritating for the gums.
- Our ceramic braces are self-ligating which reduces both the duration of appointments and the number of appointments needed.
Self-ligating brackets offer a range of advantages over the use of traditional elastic o-rings. Self-ligating braces use a specialised clip instead of the small o-rings used with traditional braces, and this helps to gradually move the teeth into place. These specialised clips help to reduce the amount of pressure that is placed on the teeth and can also help to decrease the time you spend in-chair and the amount of adjustments that need to be made since the o-rings don’t need to be replaced.
Eliminating the o-rings also helps with maintaining your oral hygiene as the elastic o-rings tend to gather more plaque than self-ligating brackets, as food can get stuck underneath the elastic.
Another benefit is that clear o-rings can actually become discoloured when eating and drinking certain foods. The self-ligating clips are designed to be stain resistant, so that you can always retain the clarity of your braces.
